Geelani distributes relief among flood victims ‘ People should ask Auqaf to account for funds’ GK NEWS NETWORK Srinagar, Nov 12: Hurriyat Conference ( G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani today distributed relief cheques worth Rs five lakh and packets containing essential commodities among 50 flood victims of Srinagar and Islamabad ( Anantnag) districts. “ Geelani, at a function held at Hurriyat headquarters Hyderpora, here, gave away Rs 10,000 cheque and a packet of essential commodities as relief to each of the flood hit 50 families of Srinagar and Islamabad ( Anantnag) districts in the seventh phase of relief cheque distribution,” said a spokesman of the Hurriyat in a statement. “ People are very angry at the insensitive approach exhibited by administration. Currently thousands of families are facing immense problems and living in miserable conditions,” Geelani said, adding, “ Fifty seven Muslim countries and rest of the world were ready to extend help but the government of India did not permit them to send their relief to flood hit people directly but asked them to deposit their relief and aid in Prime Minister’s relief fund. New Delhi deliberately created hurdles to deprive the flood hit people of Kashmir of international aid and assistance,” Geelani said. Referring to the local Auqaf and Baitul Maal committees, Geelani said, “ It is very sad that either these institutions are defunct or managed by PDP or National Conference. The assets of these institutions including orchards and properties are in the control of these pro- India parties. These assets are not utilized for betterment and uplift of the deserving people. We are witness to the fact that as soon these parties come to power they take the charge of these institutions and misuse the funds and income for their political ends. The people should ask them to account for these funds.”
