Geelani reiterates protest call against Sumbal killings ‘SHUT BUSINESS ESTABLISHMENTS FROM 12.30 TO 2.30 PM TODAY’ GK NEWS NETWORK SmallerDefaultLarger Srinagar, July 4: Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (M) Syed Ali Geelani Thursday reiterated his call for peaceful demonstrations on Friday against the killing of two youth at Markandal Sumbal in Army firing and appealed people to suspend their activities and keep their business establishments closed from 12.30 pm to 2.30 pm. Geelani also appealed people to offer funeral prayers in absentia for the slain youth after Friday prayers. In a statement the Hurriyat (G) spokesman Ayaz Akbar quoting Geelani said that “peaceful and symbolic protest against state terrorism would be held at all places after the Friday prayers.” Akbar said as per the program, peaceful protest rally would be taken out at Jamia Masjid Srinagar and Hamza Masjid Lal Chowk. “Whether AFSPA remains or is revoked, killings and Markandal-like incidents will continue. We can no longer remain silent over such incidents. It is our religious and moral obligation to register our protest against these gruesome events,” Geelani said. Elaborating, Geelani said, “We are least bothered about the stance adopted by Omar Abdullah (Chief Minister) with respect to revocation of AFSPA. We believe that violations of human rights and killing innocent people will continue till last Indian soldier remains on ground.” “Indian soldiers brutally killed two innocent youth in Markandal and the state police imposed restrictions and did not allow people to offer condolence to the bereaved families. It is a worst example of state terrorism. Such suppressive measures perpetrated by State cannot be overlooked and protest against these excesses is obligatory like that of prayer and fasting,” Geelani said. Geelani said during the regime of Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah, “AFSPA apparently was not implemented.” “Yet hundreds of people were rounded up and beaten to pulp by Indian forces and state government remained mute spectator. Neither FIR was lodged nor the personnel involved such incidents were brought to justice. India and its forces have been treating Jammu and Kashmir as their colony and they can even kill entire population to continue their illegal control,” he said. The Hurriyat (G) Chairman said the ongoing freedom movement in J&K has reached a crucial stage. “Since last 65 years, India with its full military might is trying to crush the ongoing freedom struggle. Omar Abdullah and other pro-India politicians are lending a helping hand and extended their full cooperation to India,” he said. Geelani while stressing for steadfastness and exhibition of commitment said there are only two options for people of Jammu and Kashmir. “Either they have to surrender and agree to slavery forever or remain committed to freedom struggle and forbid every kind of bargaining. Nations with self-esteem and honour never make compromise with slavery and rather prefer death in a dignified way. I am sure that new generation would exhibit their commitment and follow this despite all odds and difficulties. History stands testimony to the fact that no oppressive power can keep a nation slave forever,” Geelani added
