Geelani’s House Arrest ‘Shaming’: PDP SRINAGAR: The pro- India Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kashmir has condemned the government’s decision to impose fresh restrictions on the movement of senior separatist leader, Syed Ali Geelani on Saturday. Mr Geelani was put under house arrest just two weeks after his detention at home ended after nine months. Naeem Akhter, PDP’s chief spokesman and MLC said placing Mr Geelani under house arrest again was highly condemnable and demanded that he be given a full political space. Mr Akhter said the present dispensation is “hell bent” to bring shame to the democratic ethos of the country. “We are living in a democratic country and putting curbs on one’s movement is undemocratic. This government is bringing shame to democracy and democratic norms.” However the ruling National Conference (NC) has defended the act saying Mr Geelani has been placed under house arrest for “instigating people to revolt against an elected government”. Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, NC’s additional general secretary, said the government did “experiment” with allowing Mr Geelani political freedom. “But what did he do?” he asked. “I want to ask Mr Geelani that what is his contribution except for inciting people, instigating them to go for violence? He is crossing limits.” Subscribe to RSS Join us on Facebook Follow Us on Twitter Socialize
