Geldymurat Nurmukhamedov released from imprisonment. The Committee for Protecting Persecuted Citizens of Turkmenistan is reported as saying that in early July the former Minister of Culture Gerldymurat Nurmukhamedov was released from imprisonment. He was detained on 4 October 2012. Back then he was involved in setting up and registering the initiative group on nominating candidates to run for the Parliamentary elections, which are scheduled to be held in December 2013. Furthermore, in his interview to the Turkmen Service of Radio Liberty/Radio Free Europe G. Nurmukhamedov seriously criticized the 2012 Presidential elections and its outcomes. The authorities did not arrange for an open court hearing. No specific accusations against the former Minister were reported. Hewasforciblyplacedinadrugabuseclinic. Usually, in such cases people are kept in close-type rehabilitation and occupational therapy centers for three to three months. Geldymurat Nurmukhammedov spent nine months in prison. Most likely he was released following the pressure of the international community. In particular, such organizations as the EU, OSCE as well as Embassies of various OSCE countries called on the Turkmen authorities to immediately release G. Nurmukhamedov from imprisonment. Since 5 July (according to other sources, since July 7) Geldymurat Nurmukhammedov has been at his home in Ashgabat.
