Gemma Guerrero Cruz wore a beautiful gown by Slims when she won the Miss International crown in Long Beach, California on 14 August 1964. She stood out with her intelligence, class, and bearing. She was only twenty one then and was working at the National Museum. She had just been granted a scholarship at Mexicos Museo Antropologico and was looking forward to it. The Guerreros were very much against her joining a beauty contest and did not even think she would win. Her uncle, then Philippine Ambassador to the Court of St. James Leon Maria Guerrero, even sent a telegram saying, Basta de barbaridades! But no one could stop her. She won and the whole country rejoiced.
