Gemma was a gas woman. Her best friend Kate Phelan remembers taking the first attached picture of Gemma and calls it her all-time favourite. It was taken during RAG Week (look away now Jim and Jospehine!) in Carlow last February. The reason it was so memorable was because Kate had never seen Gemma as... jolly (well leave it at that..) in her life! It was the night of the UV Party that was held in The Foundry nightclub. She wanted to be detroyed in UV paint so she would be lit up, so she ended up taking it out of a young lads hair and smearing it all over her face. She was only delighted with herself! Gemma adored that nightclub. The photo was taken walking up the stairs by Kate who wanted to capture Gemma so full of life, leaping around dancing to the music and loving life to the max. Soon after that picture was taken, she got a bit too excited with her excesscive dancing and fell over a table. This unfortunate mishap resulted in her having a massive bruise on her side for quite a prolonged length of time, with which she took great delight in bending the ears off everyone giving out about! The odd time her friends would manage to snap her on camera messing about, and the second attached picture shows Gemma sending what she believed would be a temporary Snapchat until Kate screenshot it. Gemma got a giggle out of this picture everytime she saw it. She was soaked in the rain in a thin, green plastic poncho at Macklemore and Ellie Goulding, but sure, there wasnt a loss in her at all. She was still loving life. He cousin and best friend Shauna remembers her quirky habits, like sucking her thumb. She had that thumb in her mouth more often than not, even while talking, and the only way youd understand her was if you were well used to it! Roisin Kehoe recalls only discovering recently that Gemma slept with her eyes half open, which brought great entertainment to everyone altogether. Nothing was ever serious with Gemma unless it had to be, and even then she would bring light to the dark situation in some way or another. She will be deeply missed for her sunny deposition and much more. Despite being a reasonable person, great for stopping arguments and who never took anything too seriously, God HELP you if you insulted Metu. Metu is the hilariously named Scottish Highland Terrier which was the second love of Gemmas life, after Frankie of course. Metu got his name from a previous owner, who named him after an Arsenal player who got kicked off the squad for drug charges. Or so the story goes! Yes, random. But Metu and Gemma were meant to be, and she saved him from an abusive home and it was LOVE. Once, in secondary school, somebody stated that Metu was ugly. It took Gemma two weeks to get over it. She was fiercely loyal. So weve included pictures of Metu because we know its what she would have wanted! Theres one picture of her cuddled up with nephew and niece Ben and Amy and of course, Metu snuggled up beside them. Metu will be lost without her. Time after time, Gemmas friends use words to describe her like their friend soulmate and irreplaceable. She was the first person her great friend Roisin told when she found out she was pregnant because she was so loyal and loved the chats. She was as trustworthy as youd find. She will be sorely, sorely missed. Please take this moment to let us know your favourite memories with Gemma below. Her cousin and long term friend Shannon recalls of how they gave eachother nicknames at 6 years old, thinking they were the bees knees. Shanrock and Gemstone, two peas in a pod right up until the end. And as Shanrock rightly points out (pictured with Gemma below) Gemma was certainly that- a gemstone, special, beautiful and beautiful to behold to all who knew her. May she rest in eternal peace.
