Gems From St. Augustine Dear Family in Christ, We can learn so much about the Christian life from the Saints, even though they lived in a different age and had special vocations. The feast day of one such saint occurs August 28th, Saint Augustine, 5th century Doctor of the Church, looked upon by many as one of the most influential saints in the history of the Church. His mother, Saint Monica, her feast day is celebrated the day before his. Augustines life story, his dramatic conversion, his mothers prayers, his life as priest and bishop, and his writings are worth exploring. WE can learn so much from him, I certainly have. Over the years, I have collected some gems from his writings, which I now share with you, for your meditation and prayer. You cant have God as your father, unless you have the Church as your mother. You have made us for yourself, oh Lord and our hearts are restless until they rest in you. Say Amen to who you are and what you are. Although God is all powerful, he is unable to give us more, he has no more to give. Become what you have received. Listen carefully... Hear His voice in yours! The Christian life is ultimately an exercise in holy desire. Late have I loved you, O beauty ever ancient, ever new, late have I loved you! You were within me, but I was outside, and it was there that I searched for you. In my un-loveliness I plunged into the lovely things, which you created. You were with me, but I was not with you. Created things kept me from you; yet if they had not been in you, thet would not have been at all. You called, you shouted, and you broke through my deafness. You flashed, you shone, and dispelled my blindness. You breathed your fragrance on me; I drew in breath and now I pant for you. I have tasted you, now I hunger and thirst for more. You touched me and I burned for your peace. Little by little, Oh Lord, you touched and calmed my heart. A final Gem this time from St. John Paul: If I were to ask St. Augustine, what advise would he give to us? Seek the truth, keep searching for the truth, embrace the truth. The truth has a name - Jesus. Your response? Im waiting. -Fr. Michael
