Gene Roddenberrys Star Trek was a vision of humanitys future. Each episode was generally about providing a feeling of discovery and wonder set to the tune of deep and consequential ethical and moral tales. The new movies might have been entertaining, but they definitely lacked Roddenberrys vision... and thats sad, perhaps, to an extent. But, really, its okay to take them as what they are -- action space operas, not unlike Star Wars -- and be content with that. But it would certainly be nice to have some more Star Trek series in the spirit of Roddenberry which are about humankind overcoming their more base tendencies of greed and violence and instead boldly embracing a future of profound self-accountability, knowledge-based decision making, warfare as a last measure, and equality of opportunity.
