Genealogy Tidbit: On 8 November 1907 my 22 year old Grandfather Arthur George Nelson Deline nearly drowned. He was single and took the day off from his Engine 1 Hook & Ladder Firemen duties in Watertown and headed to Sackets Harbor way for a relaxing day duck hunting in the local marshes (via a small boat). Around 6:30 PM brisk winds began to blow, the waves rolled, and soon his craft capsized and he was thrown into the choppy waters. He struggled to right the boat however quickly tired against the winds and the waves. Although he was able to eventually right the boat, he had no strength to pull himself in... after accepting his fate of drowning, he gave himself one last attempt and found himself somehow in the boat. Immediately going unconscious, he was rescued by two Dexter residents after hearing his screams for help. By 9:30 he was wrapped in a blanket, getting warmed by a fireplace, and telling his harrowing stories to family and friends. He laughed as he told how he lost his 3 prized ducks, his shotgun, his pocket watch, and his coat. Note: The two Dexter men were recognized by local officials for their prompt life saving actions.
