Genealogy Tip Tuesday - 1800 census The 1800 census was the second official census of the U.S. Beginning on Aug. 4, 1800 and taking 9 months to complete, it included 16 states and territory northwest of the Ohio River, Indiana and Mississippi Territory. Although the District of Columbia had already been founded, its citizens would have been listed in Virginia and Maryland census records. Unfortunately, there are a number of states and territories from this census year that are lost. The 1800 census lists head of household, the number of free white males and free white females (by age catagory), number of slaves owned, the number of other free white persons (not Native American) not taxed, the town or district and the county.
