General Babangida Calls for Devolution of Powers amongst the Three Tiers of Government Former Military Leader, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has called for devolution of powers between the three tiers of government and diversification of the nation’s economy. Speaking shortly after he received members of the Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Commission, on a courtesy visit at his Hilltop residence in Minna, the former Nigerian Leader explained that if properly streamlined, the responsibility of Federal, State and Local governments would lighten the burden on the different tiers. He stated that the commission had a great task ahead in trying to do what it had already tagged highly politicized issue and expressed sympathy with the commission. General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, however, expressed his support to the commission adding that its work required doggedness. The former Military Leader advised that the nation must move away from a mono-cultural economy and diversify in other to boost the economy and create more opportunities. Earlier, the Chairman of the Revenue Mobilization and Fiscal Commission, Mr. Elias Mba said they were in the former president’s residence to get his input into the proposed review of the revenue allocation formula. He explained that the commission was carrying out extensive consultation with past leaders, elder statesmen, market men and women on the subject. The Chairman also announced that the commission had carried out public hearings in the entire geo-political zones ion the country during which he said they sought the support and contributions of then people. Mr. Elias Mba, who recalled that the commission was established during the Babangida regime in 1989 and that the last review was done in 1992, noted that one of the mandate of the commission was to review from time-to-time the revenue allocation formula and its principals operation to ensure conformity and changes in line with the existing realities. He said, in line with the wishes of Nigerians, the commission had began the review of the present revenue allocation formula and commended General Babangida for his commitment towards the unity of the nation and its development.
