General Knowledge and Current Affairs dated 15th August 2014: The Union Government has decided that those applying for vacancies before undertaking any government job on the civil side would continue to be entitled to Armed Forces’ reservation benefits for any subsequent employment. ------------- Ex-servicemen are eligible for 10% reservation in Group C and 20% in Group D posts in all the central civil services. Benefit of reservation is also extended at 10% of the vacancies in the posts up to the level of Assistant Commandant in all para-military forces to be filled by direct recruitment. ------------- Modi to visit Japan from August 31. During the visit, India may sign agreements for infrastructural investment for the government’s “smart cities” initiative, with Japan proposing project development agreements on high-speed railways,industrial corridors like the DMIC (Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor) and highway construction. ------------- Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje will re-launch the project for womens financial independence - Bhamashah Scheme from Udaipur. ------------- Mangalore to become kerosene free city. Delhi has become the first ‘kerosene-free city’ in the country. ------------- The Kalpana Chawla award for courage and daring enterprise for 2014 was given to SP R. Ponni. ------------- Colourful parades were held around the nation as the country celebrated its 68th Independence Day. ------------- The Lok Sabha passed the Apprentices (Amendment) Bill. According to the Bill, new trades, including IT-enabled services, would be included in the scheme of apprenticeship and employers can formulate their own recruitment policies. The Union government would also be empowered to make rules with regard to qualification. ------------- Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a scheme under which MPs (Members of Parliament) will develop one model village each in their constituencies.
