Genesis 11:4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. They wanted to make a name for themselves. When people don’t find their security and satisfaction in a relationship with God, they turn to the acclaim of man. A drive for the praise of others is a snare used by the devil The second reason given in this verse for building this tower was to keep all the people together. Those who don’t know God are not content or secure by themselves. They find their identity in society and not in a relationship with God.
