Genre-bending The Family China by Ann Shin wins the Anne Green Award The 2013 Anne Green Award has been awarded to The Family China by Ann Shin, an astonishing book of poetry with a related performance and video series about family, migration and personal identity. The Anne Green Award is an annual prize given to an artistic work that explores and challenges traditional forms of story and narrative. Named after the Founding Director of Wordfest, Anne Green, the fund was created for the 15thanniversary of Wordfest in 2010 to continue Green’s commitment to profiling innovative work. The Anne Green Award will be presented to Ann Shin on October 15, 2013, at Calgary’s Wordfest. The Family China, Shin’s second book of poetry examines the decentering experiences of migration, loss and death, and the impulse to build anew. The Family China was released by Brick Books and TINARS (This Is Not A Reading Series) in May 2013, and combines the text with a photo and video interview series called Smashing Family China. The series explores how household items accrue history, become weighted with meaning, and how breaking pieces can be liberating. The entire project – book and photo and video series poses the question: What can poetry become in the age of new media? Click here to watch one of the shorts. “… This short, dazzling collection of poems contains a universe—nothing short of North American life in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century. Somehow it is all here, joyously offered up, birth, death, and everything in between, including…the modern war in relationships and families, the dark-light pastoral dream of childhood…” – Karen Connelly Ann Shin will be reading in Calgary, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Toronto, and is available for interview at the different festivals, or by telephone in advance. Video excerpts and photos from the series are also available for media use.
