Gents... Daft question, but is there a maximum height that you can set single coil pickups on a jazz bass (without impacting sound, as ive been told magnets can interfere with strings if too close)? The reason i ask, is that I like my pickups close as possible to the strings (like a ramp), but never set it up in this manner on a passive single coil jazz. Ive also noticed that typically the neck pickup is much lower down in the body than the bridge pickup (im assuming this is for volume of front pickup as being louder due to more string movement??) Will setting them similar heights change the sound massively? I know after twenty years of playing, i should know this, but im not a meddler of basses! Ive also got one of the new USA Precision deluxes that i want to do similar changes to also, and again not sure how the bass will react as they are hum cancelling pickups in an active setup.
