Georg Frideric Handel’s “Amadigi di Gaula” (HWV 11) is the fifth Italian opera in three acts that Handel wrote while in London in 1715. It is based on “Amadis de Grèce” (Amadis of Greece), a French tragédie-lyrique by Destouches andAntoine Houdar de la Motte. However, it is not certain who, in the case of Handel’s rendition, was the librettist. The first performance of this opera was in London on May 25 1715. Handel prominently used wind instruments, so the score is quite colorful, and at times resembles the “Water Music”, which Handel composed only a few years later. Interestingly, “Amadigi” uses no voices lower than alto, actually the main character, Amadigi, is an alto castrato, and the opera ends in a minor key. The opera was a success and received at the minimum of 17 further performances in London through 1717. Here we have the aria of Melissa, sung by Cecilia Bartoli with the magnificent performance of Gábor Tarkövi. https://youtube/watchv=hTOXbADJyyM&feature=youtu.be&app=desktop
