George Harrison once said, “All the world is birthday cake, so take a piece, but not too much.” Cake…usually a sweet snack that might be enjoyed after lunch or dinner. However, DID YOU KNOW…scientists say eating chocolate cake as part of a full breakfast can help you lose weight? New research says having dessert for breakfast burns off the pounds. This new study shows that morning is the best time to consume sweets because that’s when the body’s metabolism is most active – and we have the rest of the day to work off the calories. Eating cookies or chocolate as part of breakfast that includes proteins and carbs also helps stem the craving for sweets later. Now that sounds like an interesting breakfast!!! It probably tastes great! Speaking of taste, did you know that females have more taste buds than males? Well, sort of. Really they just “recognize” the taste of things more easily. Some scientists say genetics plays a role in the number of taste buds we have on our tongues. A Yale University researcher says that people with more taste buds will be able to enjoy more foods. OK, that makes sense. Yet another recent study performed at the University of Copenhagen looked at taste sensations of children. Over 8,900 schoolchildren from Denmark were tested. The experiment was designed to recognize the ability of the children to discover sweet and sour tastes, to find out what they prefer when each sensation varied in intensity, and to find out their amount of taste buds. The findings showed that girls recognize taste much better than boys. They also found that boys need about 10 percent more sourness, and 20 percent more sweetness to be able to recognize the taste of something. Pupils were also asked to count ‘taste buds’. This experiment showed that boys and girls have largely the same number of taste buds. Surprisingly, the study also showed that boys have a sweeter tooth than girls, and about 70 percent of all the children like the taste of fish. Really? Fish? Hmm, that sounds a bit fishy to us! But we really can’t get away from fish…there are more than 24,000 known species of fish living in the world’s oceans, lakes, streams, ponds, and rivers? Fish were the first vertebrates to appear on Earth. Each species evolved over millions of years, adapting to its environment. Because of these changes, some fish can only live in fresh water, while others can only live in salt water. There are even some fish that can live in both types of water! Is that like humans being ambidextrous????? Here’s an interesting thought – did you know that water isn’t really wet? HUH?? That’s right. Wetness is just a feeling we experience. Liquids have special qualities that make us feel ‘wet’ when we touch them. When we change those qualities, water can be hard as a rock, or light as air (think about ice and steam). Well, it may not be wet, but it certainly tastes good. But wait, water is tasteless! Taste is a perception that is interpreted by your taste buds (homework: how many taste buds DO you have?). Humans are able to “taste” because of the way molecules in food and drink interact with the taste buds. Water contains nothing to trigger our taste buds!! It’s time to go back to thinking about that sweet treat that George Harrison was referring to: birthday cake. That certainly isn’t tasteless. That is because the molecules in the sugar and other sweet items in cake interact with those taste buds!! So, enjoy your birthday cake because you are not alone in celebrating…DID YOU KNOW that you share your birthday with at least 9 million other people in the world? That’s some celebration! And speaking of celebrations, we think its in very good taste to celebrate with awesome cakes like these! ~ptfb team
