George (Mooney) Gibson (1880-1967) from London Ont (born on Blackfriars Street) was a strong-armed catcher who powered the Pittsburgh Pirates to a World Series victory over the Detroit Tigers in 1909. Gibson was one of the few catchers who could gun down base-stealing threat Ty Cobb. And he did. That same year, Gibson, a bricklayer in the offseason, built sturdy homes at 31, 33, and 35 Charles St., a few blocks west of Tecumseh Park, now Labatt Memorial Park. He also planted a silver maple that year in front of 31 Charles that today is a spendid, massive and healthy specimen. ~ LFP, July 8, 2009.
