George Zimmerman found not guilty. In attempt to understand how that is possible, I listened to several legal analysts in news media. The consensus is that the legal burden that had to be proven for self defense in Florida was whether Zimmerman felt his life was in danger at the moment that he shot Trayvon Martin. So basically, everything that lead up to the killing was a moot point. Forget that Zimmerman profiled Trayvon and followed Trayvon against the advice of law enforcement, forget that Zimmerman initiated that totally preventable murder. I am shaking my head in disbelief. I hope that the legal burden of self defense in Illinois is not the same. Otherwise, because of the high profile this case received, there may be a lot more people killing other people and claiming self defense. My heart goes out to the Martin family and friends. Somehow this justice does not seem just but I pray that people will not target our Hispanic brothers and sisters, riot in the streets or seek revenge against the jurors or lawyers as retaliation for the not guilty verdict.
