George adopted our family when my brother and his dogs were out - TopicsExpress

George adopted our family when my brother and his dogs were out walking one day. He was skeletal and matted, and although he was weak, a good walk was irresistible -- so he trotted along and followed them home. Over the next few weeks, my brother nursed him back to health and searched for his owners. It was a relief we couldnt find them, because he stole our hearts. Hes been family ever since. I spent five years living with my brother, and claimed George as my dog by proxy. We spent a lot of time walking along the Greenline, where he would have to stop every 3-5 seconds to smell everything. If he didnt think he was walked long enough, he would plop down in front of our house and refuse to budge until we walked a little more. And then there was the time I had to chase him down wearing a bathrobe because he decided to walk himself. He never liked toys, but would neatly shred paper if it was left on the ground. He, like everyone in my family, appreciated a good meal. For several months, my brother and I were conned into thinking the other had forgotten to feed him. George would lick his empty bowl, look up to us with sad eyes, and be rewarded with food. We caught onto his game when his weight began to spike. George was a character, but that just endeared him to us even more. He allowed me to hold him and bury my face in his fur on rough days. I never had to summon him over, he just knew. And after I started working in aviation, there was no one happier to see me come home, or sadder to see me leave. He started laying down in front of my suitcases every time he saw them packed. I wish Id taken a little more time to pet him the last time. He spent the past year battling health problems, and was getting older, but I still thought Id see him one more time. I found out this morning that I wont. He crossed over the rainbow bridge last week, and no one told me until now. Im going to miss my boy, and hope that wherever he his, hes getting back scratches, walks, and all the steak he can eat. Although there is an irreplaceable void, Im thankful for the years we shared and wouldnt trade them for anything. I sure do miss my buddy, though.
