Georgia, Still the New Eastcoast Hollywood? Be careful of knee jerk reaction to accidental excessive blast We never actually got down to the site of the movie filming, but we certainly heard of the explosion, and, thankfully, we did not have a repeat of the accident on the train tracks that took place in Athens some months ago where deaths were involved. However, there was more than a little property damage, and we feel sure that the company will do as they promised in paying for the repair and lost earnings of the businesses damaged by the blast. Accidents will happen despite what you might do to attempt to prevent them. You do have to be careful, especially when dealing with pyrotechnics, but there is only so much that can be done in advance. Is the additional revenue gained by the city-county and to the merchants worth a REASONABLE risk? We think that most of us would agree, Yes. We take a risk when we leave our homes in the morning. We are not familiar with what is involved in contracting for allowing the city streets and privately owned buildings to be used in a movie, but surely there are provisions for insurance, safety, and reimbursement for any damages. What happened here was an accident. The idea of a Macon-Bibb County office to handle such activities, as proposed by Commissioner Elaine Lucas, may or may not prove to be necessary. We are sure that they will discuss and get advice from Elliott Dunwody of the Macon Film Commission for any experience and advice that he might have. We suspect we will know more after the commission’s Economic & Community Development Committee on Tuesday.
