Georgia’s Red Cross Partnering with Communities Statewide to Provide Relief from Tuesday’s Winter Storm Wednesday, January 29, 2014 — On day two of bitter cold, icy roads and stranded motorists in Georgia, Red Cross chapters across the state continue to work closely with emergency agencies and community partners in more than 15 counties to help neighbors suffering from Tuesday’s winter storm. Food and water, along with hundreds of cots, blankets, pillows and personal hygiene kits are among the supplies the Red Cross made available to county governments, churches, homeless shelters, and other good Samaritans for pre-planned and spontaneous warming centers. Coordination began on Monday and continued today to ensure that facilities had access to needed items before the possible re-freezing of roads tonight. Staff and volunteers remain on alert for new and developing needs in communities statewide. In hard-hit metro Atlanta, the Red Cross opened its warehouse to the Georgia National Guard early this morning and provided 1,250 blankets, water and snacks for distribution to motorists stranded overnight by ice and gridlock. Despite the severe weather conditions, the Red Cross continues to respond to home and apartment fires statewide and has provided food, shelter and other necessities for dozens of people since the storm began.
