Gerard Houllier hailed three elements of Steven Gerrards character - TopicsExpress

Gerard Houllier hailed three elements of Steven Gerrards character – the man, the player and the leader – after the No.8 announced plans to leave Liverpool at the end of this season. A remarkable Anfield career which to date includes 695 appearances and 180 goals will be brought to a close when 2014-15 concludes, following 17 stellar years with the Reds. Houllier managed the midfielder for six seasons as he developed from a promising local talent to a player of world-class quality, known, revered and feared across the globe. It was his decision to appoint Gerrard as captain in 2003, a role that the talismanic No.8 has filled with class, dignity and generosity ever since. There are three things I remember, the Frenchman reflected to LFCTV HD within moments of the news being confirmed on Friday morning. One is the man, because of his great personality; he is a very generous and kind person. His class is that he is very accessible, you can always go to him and he will always listen to people. He is a great man. He is also a fantastic player. Stevie is somebody who inspires, somebody who leads, somebody you want to follow. He pulls the team through in difficult times. He is also a very inspirational leader and that is why I made him captain.
