Gerhard Richter painted Klorolle in response to seeing Marcel - TopicsExpress

Gerhard Richter painted Klorolle in response to seeing Marcel Duchamp’s readymades at an exhibition in Krefeld in 1965. As a source for his painting Richter used a black-and-white photograph of a toilet roll. In the same year Richter also painted two slightly larger versions of Klorolle based on another photographic source. Although Richter used the same subject, colours and technique for all three versions, the black-and-white contrast is different in each work.
