German Unemployment Declined in July Amid Recovery German unemployment dropped for a second month in July, adding to signs the recovery in Europe’s largest economy is gathering pace and potentially buoying support for the government before September elections. The number of people out of work decreased by a seasonally adjusted 7,000 to 2.93 million, the Nuremberg-based Federal Labor Agency said today. Economists predicted the jobless number would remain unchanged, according to the median of 34 estimates in a Bloomberg News survey. The adjusted jobless rate stayed at 6.8 percent, near a two-decade low. Business confidence measured by the Ifo institute rose for a third month in July and GfK SE (GFK) said yesterday that consumer confidence will climb to the highest level in almost six years in August. Chancellor Angela Merkel seeks a third term as leader on Sept. 22 on the strength of shielding Germany from the worst effects of the euro-area debt crisis.
