Germany has been pursuing an efficiency-and-renewables revolution - its Energiewende (energy turnaround) is succeeding despite the challenges of being in a cloudy high-latitude zone, heavily industrialized, and highly competitive businesses. Around 23% of German electricity is supplied from renewables - prices are falling so dramatically that dramatically that energy-intensive industry, making German industrial power highly competitive - German exports of cheap power to neighboring countries are increasing rapidly. Despite critics saying wind and solar power is unreliable, Germany ranks No.1 in European grid reliability - Denmark just behind - both are about tenfold better than the U.S. which has far less power from renewable sources.
