Yes, it’s true – “not enough time” is no longer a good excuse. You can get fit – really fit –with only 10 minutes of exercise. But you have to be willing to put in the work. (Surely you didn’t think it was going to be easy.) Have you tried ultra-short workouts? Do you like them or do you prefer a more traditional approach? Study after study has shown that short, intense bouts of exercise not only get you fit, but may even better help you keep your weight in check. One showed the 7-Minute Workout improved fitness level more than the standard 60-minute workout. Another showed just 4 minutes of Tabata training (now you’re talking a hard workout!) met the guidelines for improving fitness and burning fat. A 20-minute all-out workout was even better. And there are countless options. If you’ve always wanted to try a kettlebell workout, researchers at the American Council on Exercise found that a 20-minute workout burned over 20 calories per minute – results that they describe as “off the charts!” If you’re not sure how to get started, the good news is there’s lots of help out there. 1. The free 7-Minute Workout app is a great intro. It walks you through the exercises, shows you how to do them, and even tells you when it’s time to move to the next exercise. 2. For more apps, do an Internet search for “short workout apps” and enjoy. 3. YouTube abounds with trainers sharing their short workout routines. Just make sure they’re certified. Still a little unsure? Ask a certified personal trainer to create a program for you. Or, join a small group fitness class focused on quick, intense workouts.
