Get Popping! Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day Is January 26! Our favorite packing material that keeps delicate items intact has its own appreciation day every January. Bubble wrap was invented in 1957 by two engineers, Alfred Fielding and Marc Chavannes, who originally envisioned it as textured wallpaper. (Can you imagine?) That idea didn’t really appeal to consumers but IBM used the material to protect its shipments of the 1401 Data Processing System in 1960. The alternative use really took off, and we’ve been using bubble wrap to keep parcels protected ever since. There are other alternative uses for bubble wrap, other than for keeping packages secure. Don’t throw it out if you receive a package that has been wrapped in this cushioning material. Put it to good use around your house instead. Alternative Uses for Bubble Wrap Insulate a Drafty Window Keep your home warmer in winter by using bubble wrap as insulation. Spray water on its surface and stick the bubble wrap, flat side facing you, to the glass. This is also a good strategy for when you want the natural light to shine in but you still want to have a certain amount of privacy without spending a lot of money. Protect Your Windshield If you get tired of scraping off your windshield in the winter, cover it with a sheet of bubble wrap in the evening to protect it from frost. Removing snow from your windshield is easy first thing, too; simply lift off the bubble wrap and you’ll take the snow with it. Inexpensive Wall Protection Do you have a wall that gets hit every time someone opens the door? Place a small piece of bubble wrap at the spot on the wall where the door knob makes contact and you’ll save the wall from further damage. Protect the Shape of Purses If you have handbags you don’t use regularly, they can sag and lose shape over time. Keep them upright by lining the inside with bubble wrap. Take it on Thrift Shop Expeditions The next time you head out bargain hunting to a thrift store, bring some bubble wrap with you. You may find some delicate items you want to buy and the store may not have anything to protect breakables properly. The last thing you want is to have your treasures break on the way home.
