Get ready for CA gas prices to go up this Jan. 1st... thanks to Cap-and-Trade: The CA Air Resources board (CARB) will start charging all of us for the emissions coming out of our cars using an emissions tax which is supposed to start out at @$0.10/gal or less. I dont claim to understand it fully, but unfortunately the price will be set by a government run auction where companies & individuals will buy & sell carbon credits. It is said that when the cap (of how much fuel CARB wants us to use) is reached, they will prevent the sale of gas & diesel, even if there is demand. They say their goal is to make us stop using so much. Groups tried to delay this, but our legislature & Gov. Brown refused. So that means all gas & diesel in CA will go up, so the prices of goods will go up as well. I wanted to know where all of these extra gas taxes out of our pockets will go, so I researched it... Companies with emissions have already been paying taxes to CARB or their Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, which has been receiving about $460 mil/yr. Our state gov decided to earmark one quarter of that for spending on housing & public transit programs for poor communities (saying its because they suffer more from toxic air pollution). The rest of the money is supposed to be spent on curbing global warming emissions but Gov Brown already took $500 million out to pay down the general debt. We already pay .68 cents a gallon in taxes, get ready to be squeezed for more, with no knowing how much theyll decide to charge us for using gas. And if we dont stop using it, theyll charge us more & more, since their goal is to reduce emissions in CA by 30% by 2020 (thats only 5 years).
