Get the Facts, Take the Tour is tonight at Monroe Road Elementary - TopicsExpress

Get the Facts, Take the Tour is tonight at Monroe Road Elementary at 7 pm. We would encourage not only MRE parents to attend, but also invite families from the other elementary schools, or with children who are not yet school age, to see an example of a newer school. A question that frequently comes up about the bond is: MRE is a brand new building! How can it need $1 million worth of work? Yes, it is our newest building at 13 years old but it is no longer brand new. Some of the improvements to take care of are from the wear and tear that would be required in any of our buildings after 13 years of daily use by hundreds of students. Indeed, the same type of work is included in the bond at all the other schools, too. One example at MRE would be replacing the carpet in the music room. It has gone beyond worn to having holes in it. But that is a relatively minor expense at only .5% of the MRE project budget. The bigger items items address changes since the construction of the building. One is security and safety enhancements. No one wants another school to be added to the list of school tragedies like Sandy Hook Elementary. For that reason, ALL of the Bedford Schools would be getting safety and security enhancements such as reconfigured main entrances, lobby and office areas meant to protect our students and staff. Another safety concern is the pick-up/drop-off traffic. When the traffic backs up onto the main road, it increases the likelihood of accidents. Accidents HAVE happened in our district in these backups. With the redesign of the traffic flow and the addition of more asphalt to accommodate more vehicles, we can get that traffic off of the main roads. Again, this is not unique to MRE; ALL district schools would have this issue addressed in the bond. When our elementary schools were built, there were sections of half day Kindergarten. With morning and afternoon sessions, you could teach 2 separate classes in the same room. When the state switched to all day Kindergarten, it meant that each class would need their own space. Extra classes are held in rooms not designed for this age group and their needs. This bond would address this change at MRE, and the other elementary schools as well, to give these students the best foundation for their educational career to be built upon. MRE is the only school in the district without lockers. Students are using more communal storage for their belongings. Those are some of the highlights. You are welcome to stop by tonight to find out more! As always, any questions can be emailed to [email protected].
