Get the Facts, Take the Tour is tonight at Smith Road Elementary - TopicsExpress

Get the Facts, Take the Tour is tonight at Smith Road Elementary at 7 pm. We will meet in the lobby. In the bond proposal, SRE will get a 4 classroom addition and a major renovation to a like-new school feel with a secure main entrance. Once the work is completed, estimated for a September 2016 reopening, the DRE facility will be relocated to SRE. Why is SRE being reopened when it was the first building closed rather than just renovating DRE? It is because of the structural differences between the buildings. DRE has wooden beams supporting the roof structure. The beams protrude through the exterior of the building and absorb moisture. Those beams show the effects of moisture and cracking. Many sections are bolted with steel plates to reinforce them. To go through the entire building and adequately reinforce all of those beams would be expensive and extend the life of the building 20 years before we find ourselves in the same situation again. Costs for the beam repair and other necessary renovations would be $8.9 million. SRE is constructed with brick and mortar and steel beams and steel roof decking. It does not have the beam issues. The cost to construct a classroom addition to accommodate the same size student population as DRE, and additional renovations, are $6.5 million. A significant savings over a DRE renovation project. Plus the longevity of the building would be greater than the DRE project. The SRE tour is the final building tour before the election.
