Get your tissues ready- Old Jack came to ARF on December 5th. None of us would have guessed that just a short two weeks later he would be in his forever home! Old jacks original owner passed away, and a young woman took him in. Shortly thereafter, her housing situation changed and she couldnt keep him. She sent ARF a message with a picture of old jack with a little boy hugging him and it broke our hearts to think this gentle dog would be homeless. We agreed to take him, not knowing if we would be his last home or if anyone would ever adopt him. He was depressed, not eating well, and rarely got out of his bed. Most days we were lucky to coax him out of his bed once, maybe twice a day. About a week ago, a young woman named Kelsey came to ARF to find a second dog for her home. She came with her sights set on a dog named Axle but learned he already had an application submitted on him. She walked around the kennel and as she passed old Jacks kennel Jack got out of his bed and greeted her at the front of the kennel. A volunteer named Logan made the comment to her that she had never seen him voluntarily get out of his bed. They opened his kennel, and as they did Jack pranced out of his kennel and followed Kelsey-right by her side- all through the floor of the adoption center. Without knowing much more than his name was Old Jack, Kelsey was in love and it was apparent Jack was too. I explained to Kelsey that he still had to go to the vet for his rabies and heartworm test but he would be ready soon. Kelsey waited on pins and needles to hear how his vet visit went the next day, and we had to tell her that we got the news that we dreaded- Jack was heartworm positive. Due to his age, our vet recommended not treating him because the treatment can be very hard on an old dog- even fatal. Without hesitation, Kelseys next questions was when can we come get him? This morning old Jacks new parents Kelsey and Ryan were at ARF to pick him up and take him home. Weve already gotten updates- including that Jack is a master at fetch, Jack and her first dog get along great, and they love him to pieces. Due to Jacks age and heartworm status, we waived Jacks adoption fee but his new parents still left a donation for the other dogs in our care. We have a feeling that Jack is in for the best years of his life!
