Getting Ready for KINDERGARTEN Children develop at different rates. They may seem unready today and yet, in less than a few months, be ready for life as a kindergartener. Here is a checklist to help your child ready themselves for kindergarten: •Help the child manage their emotions without outbursts or excessive crying •Gradually help your child learn to separate from parents without being upset •Give your child a strong sense of themselves •Visit the new classroom and new teacher with your child and look around. Take the mystery out of going to school. Discuss the classroom schedule (recess, lunch time, reading, etc) •If possible, introduce your child to other students – friends make a world of difference •Encourage your child to try new things •Explain to your child acceptable behavior in the classroom •Above all else – support and excite your child that learning is fun. Read to your child – show your excitement about learning. Be patient. Be gentle. Be ready to repeat yourself. Talk with the new teacher. When your child comes home, greet them with excitement and warmth. Let them discuss their new journey with you. The effort you put in now to ready your child for life as a kindergartener can influence their learning for a lifetime.
