Getting ready for bed, Im just replying back to someone asking me for exercise-related advice. I want to bring this up because it is such a common misconception among men & women seeking healthy habits. STAY OFF THE ELLIPTICAL FOR GOSH SAKE! Let me explain why doing cardio is NOT the best way to lose weight. Yes, you might be burning more calories at the beginning...but 60-90 minutes later you need to eat, sometimes crave, and negate most of what you burned. And, you havent built up your muscles to any significant degree. As you get older, we rely on our muscles to maintain our posture and keep our joints supported. Broken hips, ankles, knee replacements, etc. Those all can be decreased (not withstanding genetic conditions or related disorders). Whats the answer? Resistance training. Not maybe. Not well...but I love to do cardio three times a week. You are fooling yourself. And whats happened is that your mind convinces itself that it NEEDS that type of exercise because you have made a habit (just like anything else). Your body craves variability; if you are performing similar exercises over and over, your results diminish over time. So, why is resistance training more effective at burning calories? Simple. Initially, the calorie burn (during the exercise) might be low. BUT! You have broken down those muscles, lactic acid builds up, and your body goes in repair mode to build it back up. Around 48 hours is average. What do you think it happening during those 48 hrs? You got it. Post-metabolic burn!! Calories are burning days after you work out. Now, we know nutrition is 80% of your results and you MUST have a plan for that, but this post was meant for your exercise. There are many resources for resistance training and you dont need to waste your time at a gym not knowing what is the BEST way to do certain moves in minimal amount of time. Whether it be cross fit, orange theory fitness, or home-based programs like Beachbody fitness products, they all know what works MUCH more than I do. All I have to do is put a DVD in and follow directions. See all those crazy transformations people post? Its not magic. Its turning your brain off and following what works. So the next time you feel inclined to step on that Precor machine because you need to stay fit, I suggest you resistance train first. Then you can elliptical all you want!
