Getting ready to retire but I did watch Frontline on PBS tonight. The subject dealt with the prison systems and their use of solitary confinement. Research suggests that rather than helping to modify behavior in a positive way, it has the opposite effect. The prison they were filming was in Maine. The solitary confinement sections resembled the pens (with solid doors) that are at the humane society for animals. We are not a very humane society and expect those who are on the short end of the functioning stick to respond to our social indifference with gratitude and improved behavior. We use statistics to measure other systems but are unable to draw correlations regarding our correctional systems (an oxymoron)....
