Ghosts & Gothicisms in Edith Wharton Today is the birthday of author Edith Wharton, who, although primarily known for producing realistic yet mannered & tragic stories set in the upper-class milieu in which she lived, also had a touch of the weird in her writing. Though having nothing of the supernatural, such novels as Ethan Frome still convey a Gothic atmosphere of suspense & dread, as do some of her ghost tales, such as Miss Mary Pask. Even more shudder-inducing, perhaps are the stories like Bewitched & Afterward, which, while they treat of the aftermath of wrongs done, mostly leave their supernatural elements unexplained & open to interpretation. Any special favourites by Wharton? Thoughts about her work?
