Gidday Fisho’s!! There’s only a week or two to go! If you’re a Cray Fisho there’s only one week left in the season, but if you chase Trout up the streams its two weeks until you can head up and chase those spotted little buggers. Let’s talk about the Cray’s first. The season actually closes on the 31st of August; this is a Saturday so it means you won’t be able to have your Cray net’s in the water after Midnight that night. That’s a bit of a bummer if you were planning a weekend on the water but you’ve still got this weekend as well and reports are still good, so get out there and give them a shot. It also doesn’t mean you can’t camp down on the river that last weekend, it just means you can’t have any gear in after midnight Saturday. Now two weeks till Trout opening in VIC, what’s in store? I suppose it’s pretty normal for this time of year. Streams are high and dirty and virtually unfishable, weather predictions would indicate things might improve slightly but who knows! We’ve had great conditions for the fish to spawn during the closure, as we did in last season’s closure, so there’s no reason to believe there should be any problems with fish numbers this year or next. We’ll know more by next week but even if the streams stay a little high & coloured you can always pick up one or two on a worm in a backwater somewhere. Those that have braved the weather or snuck out during the odd break or two are still pulling the odd big Trout from Lake Hume. Traditionally Sept/Oct have always been the prime Trout months so if the quality remains & the quantity picks up we could be in for a real season to remember. The Reddies & Yellas continue to have a bit of a chew too. Again, it’s generally from here on, as the weather improves & the water temps increase a little, that the Yellas start to show up in ½ reasonable numbers around the edges. Anywhere from Talgarno, in the Murray Arm of Lake Hume, and above – toward Granya & beyond is the perfect direction to head! There’s nothing better than a sunny day, family running around, rod’s in the water, BBQ going topped off with a Yellowbelly or two, a couple of Reddies and a couple of Carp for the kids to poke sticks at. Come on spring time! Even though the weathers been unsettled we’ve had a couple of solid Redfin reports; The best of them from a regular customer who nailed 30 Reddies up to 1kg, they were all taken using worms and were extremely fiddly biters. It can pay to move your baits in different ways at times to try for the best possible results. Releases have increased from Lake Hume and a few more Trout are starting to show up because of it. Darren Read recently picked up a Brown of over 4kg directly below the Lake Hume wall and as long as we get some reasonably consistent high water, good fish will continue to show up. You can get as cute as you like in the lure selection in that section of water but when it’s pumping hard it’s hard to beat the plain old lead fish. A piece of lead in the basic shape of a fish is as good as any, mainly because it can get down a little when that currents going hard. If your chasing a Cod, Blowerings the spot to be! We’ve had good reports of good numbers of quality fish coming in. 95% of these fish are being angled on Grubs or Yabbies, there doesn’t seem to be much action on Lures at the moment, most reports are coming from the top end of the lake. There’s also the odd Reddie being angled & the occasional Trout being trolled. The Trout are not in big numbers, mainly Rainbows and again mainly in the top end of the Lake. Eucumbene is producing a few nice fish. Most of these are being angled on worms or Powerbait. Tantangra is the best of the Snowy Lakes just at the moment though, there’s been some great fish being picked up, mainly trolling. Minnow style lure’s are outgunning all else 10 to 1 they tell me so if you’re heading up make sure you’ve got some NilsMaster 8cm, Rapalas between 5 & 110cm and a McGrath or two which will get you that little bit deeper & give you that range of depth that might make all the difference!
