Gillards changes to the Single Parents Paymentd have been one of ALPs best reforms from a social action point of view and heres why. Originally Howard brought forward the changes to the Parenting payment but created a Grandfather group which in turn ment that people who were currently on the payment kept it and any new parents got the new sh*t deal. In Gillards defence and ALP how were they to know these people were doing it so rough? Once Gillard amended it and put everyone into the same basket there are now a heap of new people that know they were getting hard done and a heap of older parents who now know what the younger families were going through. Gillard has assisted in shining the light on how hard it is to be a single parent and how crap the reforms were. Previously these social movements were non existent as no one knew, yes it can be argued that the welfare system needs to be fixed as people are living below the poverty line. But in regards to the parenting payment nothing would of been fixed if it was not for Gillards reform. Now it is a task of fixing the issue which I know ALP are looking into. Communication between ALP and the community needs to be a bit better tho, it will also assist in combating the Greens. Speaking about internal discussions and policy development will assist in progressing ALP. I understand the need to be quite on things but there are a lot of things that require community engagement. Basic community development principles Social inclusion. It is what the Greens have on us. Tim Watts has done a great job in Melbs west with WestSide Labor which is both community engaging and inclusive.
