Gillian Kearney has spoken about the drama ahead for her character Emma Barton, revealing that she will struggle to forgive her estranged husband James for betraying her. Show bosses yesterday announced the casting of the former Brookside and Casualty actress as Emma, who will arrive on screen early next year after her youngest son Finn tracks her down. Although Emma is delighted to have the chance to reconnect with her family after 22 years, there are bombshells on the way as she learns that James did cheat on her with Moira Barton - just as she had always suspected. She also discovers that their one-night stand left Moira pregnant with Adam. Speaking at an Emmerdale press event this week, Kearney explained that the subsequent story will allow viewers to learn more about exactly why Emma abandoned her young family as her marriage broke down. Kearney commented: Youll probably realise when you watch it that there are things that Emma isnt proud of. She went to a very dark place back then. She never knew for sure about Moira and James, but she always suspected and she became quite paranoid about it. Emma was constantly at James about that. I think she was quite overwhelmed, as she had three young boys and she was probably a very young mum herself. You dont tend to have the strength probably at that age. She continued: Emma blames herself when she comes back because she doesnt know that she was right all along. She is delighted that Finn has come to find her, and then she ends up hanging around a gay bar hoping that shell meet him again because she wants to make things right and wants to get her family back. When things come to light and Emma realises that she was right, thats when the anger kicks in with James. She discovers that hes a liar and she wasnt neurotic and paranoid after all. She realises that her instinct was right, and she went to a very dark place that she cant forgive James for sending her to. However, Kearney also promised that there will be light and shade in her portrayal of the new character. She explained: Im trying to make it so Emma doesnt just have a dark presence. She is full of love and the love is genuine. She has been a wife and she is a mother to three boys. Emma genuinely loves her boys and I think she still holds onto the love for her husband too. Emma is quite vulnerable, quite childlike and quite fragile. There are times when she really enjoys being with the boys and she forgets about everything, but then shell tip the other way and there is a darkness there - because at the height of her happiness she remembers what shes missed out on. It could have been like this for 22 years if things had been different. Kearney added that she is delighted to be back in the soap world after her previous experience in the genre. She said: Its really exciting. I cant wait, as you get some time to build and put detail into performances when you know that youve got a few months or whatever to do it. Im having a great time and the guys are so helpful. Its just a big family, everyone has been so lovely and Im just really enjoying myself. I love Emmerdale so I was a bit starstruck when I came on set! Its been great.
