Gimme Shelter - Stanningley Bypass. Ive often wondered what this - TopicsExpress

Gimme Shelter - Stanningley Bypass. Ive often wondered what this concrete shelter is built into the retaining wall of the Stanningley Bypass is. A set of steps lead down to it from Swinnow Road. It looks just like an ordinary bus stop, but as far as I know no service buses ever used the Stanningley Bypass? That was until I saw a similar photo of a concrete bus shelter in Leeds. I thought it must be the same structure at first, but that shelter was on Lower Wortley Road. A photo of the Wortley bus shelter can be seen in the comments section below. Having discounted it as a bus stop, I looked on the old maps which showed that only a small section of the Stanningley Bypass had been built by 1961. So I wondered if it was at one time a bus stop for the new Swinnow estate being built at the time? Stanningley Bypass is perhaps most notable for the fact that a section of it became the UKs first High Occupancy Vehicle Lane in 1998. At 0700 on Monday 11th May 1998, Leeds became the first Authority in Britain to open a priority lane for car sharing vehicles. **Read all the comments below for more photos and maps**
