Gina Elise and Julia Reed Nichols, members of the non-profit “Pin-Ups For Vets,” travelled from Los Angeles, Calif. to visit inpatient Veterans at the Muskogee VAMC on Friday to boost morale and thank Veterans for their service. The women also passed out donated calendars and sang popular songs from the 1940s. Members from Pin-Ups For Vets are visiting VA and military hospitals around the country as part of a 50 state tour to show their appreciation for Veterans. “We wanted to be here today for our Veterans as a way to give back,” said Elise, who founded Pin-Ups For Vets in 2006. “We deliver our donated calendars as a gift of appreciation and it’s really just a small way to show them that we’re remembering them. We feel like it’s important for them to know how much we appreciate their service and sacrifice.” Vietnam Veteran Randy Hoggatt, who is undergoing rehabilitation for a broken ankle, said he was glad the women took the time to visit with him and other Veterans. “It’s absolutely great,” said Hoggatt. “I was pretty down in the dumps. It sure takes your mind off your foot.” As well as visiting Veterans, Pin-Ups For Vets donates funds for homeless Veteran shelters, funds for medical equipment and program expansion in VA hospitals, sends care packages to troops overseas and give glamorous makeovers to females Veterans and military wives. “We’re just trying to support our troops and our Veterans in a very unique way,” said Elise.
