Ginzan Onsen (Silver Mountain Hot Spring) is a secluded hot spring - TopicsExpress

Ginzan Onsen (Silver Mountain Hot Spring) is a secluded hot spring town nestled in the mountains of Yamagata Prefecture, originally developed for silver mining. But these days, its traditionally styled ryokan in beautiful three and four wooden buildings with exposed woodwork and white plaster walls are well-known for being one of Japans enchanting onsen towns along the river. Though with one expection, the Fujiya ryokan at the centre of town, was recently rebuilt by famous modern architect Kuma Kengo. Though it may seem a little out of place to some but its unique modern design that incorporates many traditional design elements. It is particularly breathe-taking in the evenings when the ryokan are lit up, filling the streets and bridges with illuminated gas lights. During the winter, the scenery is further enhanced with heavy snow that clings to the rooftops and walkways. While during the warmer months, ryokan guests are more likely to be out on a leisurely stroll through the historical town. There are two public baths (300-500 yen) and a foot bath (free-of-charge) can be found around the town centre. One of the public baths, the Shiroganeyu, was also designed by Kuma Kengo. The other is the Omokageyu, a public bath for private use (2000 yen per 50 minutes). In addition, many of the towns ryokan open their baths to non-staying guests during daytime for typically 300 to 1500 yen. This the place to visit if you enjoy the nostalgic bygone era!
