Girl quits school to pay for brother’s medical fees A sophomore from Wuhan in Hubei Province has quit school in order to pay the medical bills of her brother who has been diagnosed with #leukemia. In July this year, 21-year-old Zhou Xiaofang’s younger brother, Zhou Fangzheng, was diagnosed with #acutemyelogenousleukemia. The tragic news came just as the young lad had been enrolled into a local high school. While things seemed grim, there was a ray of hope that emerged. The Wuhan Union Hospital informed the family that they had located a matching #bonemarrow. Unfortunately, the expenses for Zhou Fangzheng’s treatment were estimated at nearly 1 million yuan (approx. $162,000). With her father also chronically unwell and her mother, the only real earner in the family, Zhou Xiaofang felt that she had little choice other than giving up on her education dream. So she dropped out of school and set up a vegetable stall. Luckily for Zhou, soon her story was picked up by the local media, and that led to a cascading effect of donations. According to reports, the family has, thus far, received nearly 150,000 yuan (approx. $24, 400) in donations.
