Girl sets self on fire after threats from boy in #Siliguri An 18-year-old Siliguri girl, who allegedly attempted suicide last night by setting herself on fire, died at NBMCH. She committed suicide after her schoolmate allegedly harassed her for the past few months and threatened her with dire consequences if she did not marry him. The student set herself on fire yesterday and she succumbed to her injuries at the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital (#NBMCH). The student of class XII was a resident of Ambika Nagar under the #NJP police out post, while the boy also lived there. “They knew each other from their childhood days. But for the past few months the boy used to pressure her to marry him and he even threatened to post some of her ‘doctored’ photos on the internet. The girl told him to be self dependent first, but in vain. So when there was no one in her house, she set herself on fire. Her father has filed a complaint with police, alleging that the girl had committed suicide as a local youth, Manoj Burman, used to tease his daughter and would often pass lewd remarks at her. “The father has alleged that because of the youth’s behaviour, the girl committed suicide. The youth is absconding and we are trying to arrest him. We have started an investigation,” said O.G. Pal, the deputy commissioner of Siliguri metropolitan police.
