Gita 4.27. . .(12) Sarvaanindriyakarmani pranakarmani chapare (सर्वाणीन्द्रियकर्माणी प्राणकर्माणि चापरे). All the indriya (इन्द्रिय) activities, all the prana (प्राण) activities, all these you can throw into the fire of atma-samyama (आत्म-संयम), self-control, self-discipline, take all these energies and put them into that fire, then they become high character. Atma-samyama (आत्म-संयम), inner discipline, is compared to a fire. What a beautiful idea!! But, juhvati jnanadipite (जुह्वति ज्ञानदीपिते), that fire is to be lit up by the fire of jnana (ज्ञान knowledge); then only it is worthwhile. Mere dry ascetic practice has no meaning. What is the use of being a dry ascetic? What does one gain thereby? But, if there is jnana (ज्ञान knowledge) along with that asceticism, then it is wonderful; then there will not be need for too much asceticism also. So this emphasis is on jnana (ज्ञान knowledge); here it is on jnana (ज्ञान knowledge), elsewhere it will be on bhakti (भक्ति devotion); and PURE BHAKTI (भक्ति DEVOTION) and PURE JNANA ((ज्ञान KNOWLEDGE) ARE ONE AND THE SAME, says Sri Ramakrishna. So many times you will find the word jnana (ज्ञान knowledge) is used, and so many times you will find the word bhakti (भक्ति devotion) is used. LOVE OF GOD, KNOWLEDGE OF GOD -- both have the power to transform human character. Therefore, WITHOUT EITHER LOVE OR KNOWLEDGE, MERE PHYSICAL PRACTICE HAS ABSOLUTELY NO MEANING -- THEY ARE STERILE. THE DONT PRODUCE ANY GOOD AT ALL. OFTEN THEY PRODUCE VANITY, PRIDE, ARROGANCE. Then comes several types of yajnas (यज्ञ) put together in one verse.
