Give me that old time religion. Good ol’ Joe Stalin has got to be one of the most paranoid folks in history. On this day, 1953, he authorized the arrest of Jewish doctors who were involved in the so-called “Doctor’s Plot” to kill off all the top Soviet leaders. To make sure they caught all the “terrorists” they also rounded up and arrested anybody with a Jewish sounding name. The whole thing seems to go back to a Professor Yakor Etinger who was called a “bourgeois nationalist who had connections to the Jewish Anti-Fascist Connection. He was arrested and had a confession beaten out him before he died. Stalin died in March and Pravda, their fair, un-biased newspaper, boldly announced that Stalin was murdered. (He died of a stroke.) Some degree of sanity was restored when the new leaders dropped all the charges. A few weeks later it was discovered that the entire thing had been fabricated. Stalin’s Deputy Minister of State Security joined Stalin: He was arrested and executed.
