Give peace a chance! For almost two weeks, we have watched with shock and dismay as the conflict between Israel and Palestine has escalated, leading to the senseless loss of more than 500 lives. We note especially with pain the number of children who have been killed–some simply playing on the beach or on the rooftop within their own community. This cannot be allowed to continue. And now Israel has launched a ground offensive. This is likely to bring more bloodshed and cannot be accepted as a life-giving solution. We in the World Communion of Reformed Churches are aware of the complexity of the situation between Israel and Palestine. We are outraged that destructive choices are made by persons who have power. We are reminded of the biblical injunction against those who choose to rely on military might, rather than on God. We pray for real lasting peace based on justice that will usher in an era in which the two nations of Israel and Palestine can live side by side and enjoy the gifts of land and community that God has given. We call on all concerned who are taking decisions to give peace a chance, rather than to condone the use of lethal force to escalate the situation. We call on the United Nations Security Council and the international community to think about the more than two hundred people whose lives have been lost so far–especially the many innocent children–so that they take real steps to mediate this current phase of the conflict and stop the bloodshed. We call on all to pray for peace with justice in Israel, Palestine and the entire Middle East. Setri Nyomi General Secretary World Communion of Reformed Churches
