This last weekend Arabelle, the youngest, was over. We had had heavy rain and the yard was a muddy mess. There were leaves and branches piled up on the patio and into the yard. I hoped that it would dry out a bit while we made Christmas cookies in the morning. Arabelle and Joey (the pup) both had aprons on, although Joeys was on his back more like a superhero cape. We made dozens of cookies and that job was complete. The yard was still wet and muddy and the house seemed smaller and smaller with an active granddaughter and pup inside. I suggested watching a movie, but sitting still was NOT on Arabelles agenda. So, she and I donned sturdy clothes and went outside. She worked diligently with her little broom and dustpan while I raked leaves and swept the patio. Joey is still convinced that brooms and rakes are dangerous and that I need protecting so he upped the difficulty of getting the job completed with his crying lunging leaps and attempts to deal a blow to each tool. The broom is the worse for wear with Joeys repeated attacks, but I was worried about his own mouth with the rake so we had lots of pauses with reassurances about the rakes purpose and its benevolent feelings to do no harm. By the time we were done, Arabelle had mud an inch thick on her shoes, her jacket and hands and arms were muddy but her little cheeks were a rosy glow. Joey had run off his silliness and, once we cleaned off his paws and left Arabelles shoes outside, everyone was ready to go inside for a while. Arabelle went to a bath and Joey curled up for a short nap. The lull lasted for a short time, but soon there was a need to find another project to tackle their energy and imagination. It is a challenge but I am so very glad that there is a continual appetite to get something done. May we focus our energies and imaginations in a productive way today.
