Given that Coronation Street & Emmerdale both air on ITV, it would of course make sense for the producers of both shows to work together when it comes to planning future storylines but could a soap cross-over ever be on the agenda? Well, sadly, it seems we are not about to see The Rovers Return & The Woolpack taking each other on in a cricket match or something but the bosses of both soaps are apparently set to work together in order to avoid storyline clashes, so says Corrie boss Stuart Blackburn anyway. Since the dawn of time, soaps have repeated/copied each other’s plots & all of the big soaps have featured murder, rape, major accidents & any number of other horrors & many of them air around Christmas, just to get viewers into the festive mood but while Stuart Blackburn, who is Coronation Street’s executive producer, has no control over what the likes of EastEnders or Hollyoaks produce, he can see to it at least that the 2 ITV shows are always offering something different for viewers. In a recent interview with YouView, he commented: “There can be a great story we want to play & we’ll have somebody from ITV Studios who looks after both soaps who’ll say, ‘I’m so sorry, Emmerdale have decided to play that.’ But it also helps that Kate Oates, executive producer at Emmerdale & I worked together on Emmerdale as well so there’s friendship, not rivalry there. We’re constantly talking to each other & kind of sussing things out.”
