Given that Id been living in Japan as a gaijin for the better part - TopicsExpress

Given that Id been living in Japan as a gaijin for the better part of the last eight months, I was beginning to relate to what my parents mustve endured when they first came to the States forty years ago. However, once they began sharing their memories of those times, I realized that despite my inability to speak Japanese properly, their circumstances were drastically more severe, coming here with really only their education and their wits. Most funny was my Dad telling me about how he was renting a bed in a hallway of a house in Newark for $20/month and delivering Chinese food in Lower Manhattan. On one of his first deliveries, he couldnt find the address, only to show up to a pissed off secretary, bags dripping of sauce all over the place. He had a difficult time making his exit as he opened door after door only leading to closets. I asked him why that was such a challenge to which he answered that forty years ago in Taiwan, there were no such things as closets with doors. Or even closets for that matter. Hahaha. Im constantly amazed by what my parents have achieved in their lifetimes in America.
